Here is the story behind the bomb threats and the moving of the payphone. It was 1980-81 and several future members of the class of 1983 decided to make a bomb threat from the pay phone located outside of the gym. The call was made to the RHS office; several adolescent boys giggled and scrambled away to await the announcement over the loudspeaker to validate their prank. Of course, everyone knows teenage boys can't keep a secret to save their lives. By the time most of the school had assembled in the football stadium parking lot, there were rumors abound as to who or whom instigated this little ruse. Fast forward several days later when Randolph AFB's finest starting assembling the young lads in the "SP" station. One by one the sullen teenagers accompanied by their dads trotted into the old police station to be glared at by the Flight Chief and two civilian clad members of the Office of Special Investigations. The initial meeting was polite with the OSI officers smiling and befriending the young boys into giving up the source of the call whilst the salty Flight Chief played the "bad cop." But before the proceedings could continue, the OSI boys produced some government paperwork. "Son, I am about to read you your Miranda Rights." Now, the cocky teenagers most likely didn't hear anything past "You have the right to remain silent…" before turning ashen towards their Fathers gasping for help. After interviewing a gaggle of boys, the OSI and the Randolph SP secured the confessions from one Ronald Bennett, aka "Banana." For those of you who were associated with Ro-Hawk football back in those days, you will know that Coach Mickler was very fond of assigning nicknames to his players. Ron was a tall lanky kid with freckles abound who transferred in from I believe out west. He played receiver on the Freshman team and DE on defense. He sported a mop full of blonde/yellow hair that was the mainstay of the kids of the 1970's. Coach "Bob" took one look at Bennett during two-a-days and said "who the hell is he? He looks like a big ole banana!" Ron was very laid back and had an easy going personality. He was also an easy mark when it came to manipulation. As the boys assembled around the pay phone outside of the gym on that fateful day, Ron was talked into calling in the bomb threat to the office. Ron and his family lived in the West Wherrie complex on the west side of the base. After his confession, his family was invited to leave government quarters by the base commander. Most of us lost touch with Ron pretty quickly after he left the base. The pay phone was "shutoff" after the stunt. It wasn't moved until several months later; its new location was in front of the office so that Ms. Mahler and Ms. Stautzenberger could keep and eye on it. The rest of the accomplices returned to their lives knowing they dodged a serious offense to their "permanent record."
