Mr. Setemeyer taught chemistry.

We were demonstrating the reactive characteristics of pure sodium in a lab one day. In case you didn't know, sodium is highly reactive when placed in water producing an exothermic reaction. The lab specified to place a sliver of sodium in a beaker of water. The intended result is for the sodium to bubble and sizzle until it burns up in the water. We placed a pencil eraser size piece in the beaker, much larger than called for. With the larger size piece of sodium, it propelled itself to the side of the beaker. The sudden heat on the side of the beaker caused the glass to shatter sending glass, water and burning sodium all around the room!! :o :o :o

I remember Mr. Settemeyer as having a right hand pitch which could kill. Many times he clobbered unsuspecting students who could not stop talking, with a chalk filled eraser. I cannot count the times I laugh at someone who was hit by the eraser and poofed with chalk. Soooo funny even now as I think about it. Talk about explosions.. haha

Another teacher there (coach/history) told one of my classmates to shut up while he was writing on the board or she'd swallow his chalk. When she didn't, he wheeled around and got her on the cheek. It was quiet after that.

I remember one from the end of the school year. Each lab station had bottles of reagents to be used in experiments. Perry assigned Rigo Santiago to collect one of the reagents from the small bottles and pour them into a bigger bottle for storage until the next year.

Well, Rigo was quite the class clown and was chatting it up with everyone while he poured the reagents one-by-one into the large bottle.

I cant remember which reagent he was collecting, but he ended up pouring the wrong one into the big bottle. The liquid started to smoke and then either the bottle exploded or he dropped it. The result was that the reagent splashed all over him.

As we all did back in the day, he wore ployester pants and shirt. The reagent started to melt the clothes right off his body! He ran to the gym to jump in the shower! I don't think he was seriously hurt, but his Mom had to bring him a new set of clothes!

I tell that story over and over, its a classic.
